After Saul's encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, the Lord instructs the reluctant disciple Ananias to go to him, revealing Saul's appointed mission.
What Does Acts 9:15 Mean?
Acts 9:15 reveals God's surprising choice -- He tells the hesitant disciple Ananias that Saul, the fierce persecutor, is a chosen vessel to carry His name to nations, kings, and Israel. Saul had been on his way to Damascus to arrest believers when the risen Christ confronted him in blinding light. Now blind and praying, Saul waits. The Lord calls Ananias to go and restore his sight, but Ananias hesitates, knowing Saul's terrifying reputation. This verse is God's answer to that fear.
The phrase "chosen vessel" is striking. The Greek skeuos means a vessel, instrument, or container -- something set apart for a particular use. God describes Saul as a vessel He has chosen and will fill with purpose. The very man who had been a weapon against the church would become an instrument for it. His mission is defined precisely: "to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel." This threefold scope -- the nations, the powerful, and Israel -- maps the extraordinary breadth of the ministry that would follow. The verse demonstrates that no one is beyond God's reach or His ability to repurpose. The transformation of Saul into Paul is one of the most dramatic in all of Scripture, and it begins here, with God overriding human fear and declaring a future no one but He could have imagined. Grace does not merely forgive; it commissions.
In the Original Language
The Greek "skeuos" (vessel) means an instrument or container set apart for a purpose, and "bastazo" (bear) means to carry or bring forth.
