King Nebuchadnezzar has commanded all to worship a golden image or be thrown into a furnace; three Hebrew men refuse and are given one last chance to comply.
What Does Daniel 3:17 Mean?
Facing a fiery furnace, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answer the king with calm certainty: "our God whom we serve is able to deliver us." They do not argue, plead, or bargain. They simply state two truths -- God is able, and He can rescue them even from the most powerful man they have ever met. Their confidence rests not on a guarantee of escape but on the character and power of the One they serve. The phrase "whom we serve" matters: their loyalty is already settled, so the threat changes nothing.
This verse is one half of one of Scripture's boldest confessions, completed in the next verse. Here they affirm God's power without limit -- He is able. The furnace, the king, and the whole machinery of the empire are no match for Him. Yet notice they speak of what God can do, not what He is obligated to do. They leave the outcome in His hands while declaring His sufficiency. Real faith is not the certainty that God will spare us every fire; it is the certainty that He is fully able, and the willingness to trust Him with the result. That posture turns a death sentence into a testimony.
In the Original Language
The Aramaic phrase "able to deliver" (yakil leshezabutana) stresses sheer capability -- the verb shezab means to rescue or snatch out of danger.
