What Does Daniel 6:9 Mean?
Persuaded by his officials and flattered by their proposal, Darius signs the document. The decree is now law, fixed and unchangeable. In a single stroke of the royal seal, the trap is set, though the king does not yet grasp what he has done.
One hasty signature, given without weighing its end, will cost the king a sleepless night and nearly cost Daniel his life. Decisions made to please others, or to feed our own pride, can carry consequences far beyond what we foresee. The wise pause before they act; here a king does not, and a beloved servant is swept toward the lions by a law that cannot be recalled.
