This verse is part of Paul's household instructions in Ephesians 5:22-33. Addressing husbands, it holds up Christ's sacrificial love for the church as the standard, framing marriage as a reflection of that love.
What Does Ephesians 5:25 Mean?
Paul addresses husbands with a command that sets a remarkably high standard: "love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church." The measure of a husband's love is not his own preferences or culture's expectations but the love of Christ Himself. And Paul immediately defines that love in concrete terms: Christ "gave himself for it." This is love as self-sacrifice, love that gives itself away for the good of the beloved. The husband is called not to dominate but to lay himself down, to seek his wife's good even at cost to himself, just as Christ did for His people.
This reframes leadership in the home entirely. The pattern is not power but self-giving service, modeled on the One who gave Himself completely. Christ's love for the church was active, sacrificial, and aimed at her flourishing -- and that is the template held up here. For a husband, this means a daily commitment to seek his wife's well-being, to serve rather than to be served, to love in deeds and not only words. For every reader, the verse also reveals something of Christ's love for His people: a love so deep that He gave Himself entirely. The marriage relationship becomes a living picture of that greater love. To love this way is demanding, but it follows the most beautiful example there is, and it points beyond itself to the self-giving love of Christ.
In the Original Language
The Greek "agapao" (love) denotes self-giving, deliberate love. "Paradidomi" (gave) means to hand over or give up, here describing Christ giving Himself for His people.
