What Does Esther 2:17 Mean?
The king loved Esther above all the women, and she won grace and favour in his sight more than all the rest. The same favor that drew Hegai and everyone who saw her now reaches the throne itself. The crown of Vashti, vacant since chapter one, is set upon the head of a Jewish orphan, queen instead of Vashti.
This is the moment the whole chapter has been moving toward. An exile's adopted daughter, of the captivity of Jerusalem, now wears the diadem of Persia. The empire believes it has simply found a beautiful new queen. It cannot yet see that the one place from which the king might be swayed has been filled by exactly the person her people will need.
