What Does Esther 5:14 Mean?
Zeresh and his friends offer their deadly counsel: build a gallows fifty cubits high, secure the king's leave in the morning, and hang Mordecai on it, then go merrily to the banquet. The thing pleased Haman, and he has the towering gallows built at once. His hatred is satisfied by the very height of the instrument.
The fifty-cubit gallows, absurdly tall, is meant to display Mordecai's death to the whole city, the ultimate revenge of a swollen pride. But the reader senses the deadly irony already gathering. Haman builds this monument to his malice on the eve of the night his fortunes reverse. The gallows raised for Mordecai is being prepared, all unknowing, for Haman himself.
