Galatians 2:20

Galatians 2:20

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Context

Paul is confronting the idea that righteousness comes by law-keeping. His answer: he died to the law's demands and now lives by Christ.

What Does Galatians 2:20 Mean?

In one sentence: Paul's old self died with Christ, and now Christ Himself lives in and through him by faith. The Christian life is not self-improvement but a kind of exchange -- "not I, but Christ."

Yet Paul still lives a real, embodied life "in the flesh," now animated by trust in the Son of God whose love is personal: "who loved me, and gave himself for me." Faith draws daily on a life that is no longer self-generated.

In the Original Language

The Greek "systauroo" means to be crucified together with -- the old self put to death with Christ. "Pistis" (faith) is the trust through which Christ's life flows.

Application

Live today drawing on Christ's life by faith rather than your own willpower, remembering His love was personal -- for you.
