Context

Following the declaration of God's untiring greatness, verse 29 applies that truth to weary people, promising that God supplies strength to the depleted.

What Does Isaiah 40:29 Mean?

Isaiah 40:29 promises that God gives power to the exhausted and increases strength in those who have none left. It flows directly from the previous verse: because the everlasting God never grows weary, He has strength to spare for the weary. The God who never faints becomes the source for those who do.

The verse describes two groups, both at the end of themselves. "The faint" are those drained of energy, worn down by struggle. "Them that have no might" are those who have nothing left at all, utterly depleted. To both, God gives -- not merely sympathy, but actual "power" and "strength." The Hebrew suggests God multiplies strength where there was none, abundantly supplying what is lacking. Strikingly, this gift is for the weak, not the strong. God does not wait for people to gather themselves; He meets them precisely in their emptiness. This is good news for anyone who has hit their limit. The world tells the weary to dig deeper into themselves, but Isaiah points outward and upward: strength comes from God as a gift to the depleted. The verse sets the stage for the soaring promise that follows -- that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength and mount up with wings as eagles.

In the Original Language

"Power" is koach, strength or ability. "Increaseth strength" uses atzmah, to make abundant or numerous -- God multiplies strength where there is none.

Application

When you have nothing left, stop digging deeper into yourself and receive strength as a gift from the God who supplies the faint.
