Context
God identifies himself as the source and sustainer of all creation before explaining the servant's mission.
What Does Isaiah 42:5 Mean?
The prophet pauses to remind us of the identity of the one who is speaking and commissioning the servant. This is not a minor deity or a local power. This is the God who created the heavens, stretched them out with sovereign hand, and spread forth the earth. Everything that comes from the earth, all vegetation and life, springs from his creative word. More intimately, he gives breath to every person, and the spirit that allows us to walk upright and live is his gift. This same Creator is the one who now calls forth his servant.
The implication is profound: the God who can remake the heavens and earth is the same God who works through the gentle servant described above. His power to create gives him the authority to redeem. His act of giving breath to humanity speaks to his intimate knowledge of each person. When such a Creator calls us into his purposes, we are invited into the largest and most serious work there is. Our redemption is not a minor repair but the work of the one who upholds all things.
Application
When we struggle to believe that God can transform our lives or our world, remember that we worship the Creator of all things. His resources are infinite. His purpose is to renew and restore what he made. Trust his power, and offer yourself to the work he has called you to.
