Context
God directly addresses the servant, commissioning him for a mission that spans all humanity.
What Does Isaiah 42:6 Mean?
The servant's calling comes from God himself, rooted not in accident or merit alone but in righteousness, the just and right ordering of creation. And God does not call from a distance; he will hold the servant's hand, keep him, sustain him through all trials. The servant is then given a double role: a covenant of the people (echoing God's covenant promises to Israel) and a light to the Gentiles (the nations beyond Israel). This one figure will embody and extend the promises that God made to Abraham, bringing them to their full, universal scope. It is an immense calling held within a tender grip.
For those who recognize in this passage the Jesus of the Gospels, the picture deepens. He came as the fulfillment of God's covenant promises, the one in whom all nations find their blessing. But the calling applies also to us, his followers, who are called to be lights to the world, held in God's hand as we extend his kingdom. The covenant promises are not withdrawn from his people; they are fulfilled and extended through him.
Application
You are called by God in righteousness, not by accident of birth or human appointment. Whatever work God has given you, you are held in his hand and kept by his power. Whether your sphere is small or large, you are called to be a light, to embody God's covenant promises, and to draw others toward his kingdom. Trust his hand holding yours.
