Isaiah 54 comforts Zion after the suffering described in chapter 53, assuring her of God's everlasting kindness and an unbreakable covenant of peace.
What Does Isaiah 54:10 Mean?
Isaiah 54:10 promises that God's kindness and covenant of peace are more permanent than the mountains themselves. The verse takes the most stable things people know -- the mountains and hills, symbols of permanence and endurance -- and imagines them departing and being removed. Even if such unshakable things could vanish, God's faithfulness would still stand. His love outlasts the foundations of the earth.
Two things are declared unremovable: "my kindness" and "the covenant of my peace." The Hebrew word for kindness here carries the sense of loyal, covenant love -- a steadfast commitment, not a passing feeling. And it is bound to a covenant of peace, a pledged relationship of wholeness and well-being. The verse closes by naming the LORD as the one "that hath mercy on thee," grounding the whole promise in His compassionate character. Coming after God's assurance that His anger was for only a moment, this is a soaring word of comfort: His people are held by a love sturdier than creation. For any reader who fears that hardship signals abandonment, the verse insists that God's covenant kindness cannot be shaken loose.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew chesed means steadfast, loyal love or covenant kindness; berit means covenant, a binding pledged relationship that God promises will not be removed.
