Context

After the seraph cleanses Isaiah's lips with a live coal, the prophet hears God seeking a messenger. His ready response marks his formal commissioning to a difficult ministry.

What Does Isaiah 6:8 Mean?

Isaiah 6:8 is the prophet's wholehearted answer to God's call to be sent. It follows the moment his lips were touched and his guilt taken away -- only a cleansed servant is ready to volunteer. The order matters: forgiveness comes first, then commissioning. Isaiah does not offer himself until he has been made fit to be offered.

God's question is striking in its phrasing: "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" The plural "us" speaks of the fullness of the divine counsel, and the question is genuinely open, inviting a willing heart rather than conscripting an unwilling one. Isaiah's reply is immediate and unconditional: "Here am I; send me." He does not ask where, or for how long, or what it will cost -- though the verses that follow reveal the assignment will be hard. His response models the posture of every servant of God: availability before details, surrender before strategy. The God who reveals His glory and removes our sin then entrusts us with a mission. Isaiah's three short words have echoed through the centuries as the prayer of all who, having received mercy, long to give their lives back in service.

In the Original Language

"Here am I" renders hinneni, an expression of full attentive readiness used by Abraham, Moses, and Samuel. "Send me" is shelacheni, from the verb shalach, to send.

Application

Let God cleanse you first, then answer His call with a willing 'send me' before you know all the details of the road ahead.
