Context
This is the voice of the Messiah or the redeemed one, exulting in the completion of redemption, dressed for covenant.
What Does Isaiah 61:10 Mean?
The redemption is intimate and total: dressed in salvation, wrapped in righteousness. The joy is not quiet; I will greatly rejoice. It is personal: my soul, my God. We are adorned for a feast, for belonging, for covenant. The images of bridal splendor, the bridegroom decked with ornaments, the bride jeweled, show that we are made beautiful, not by our own effort but by what God has clothed us in. We wear his gift, his honor, his work.
This is the voice of the redeemed one, speaking as if the promise is already here. The garments of salvation are already on; the robe of righteousness already covers. The soul will sing because the fact is already true. We can rejoice greatly now, in the present tense, because he has already clothed us.
In the Original Language
begadim (Hebrew), 'garments' -- what clothes and covers, what is worn visibly, what transforms the person who wears it.
Application
We are clothed in Christ's salvation and righteousness, not by our merit but by his gift. Let us rejoice greatly, adorned as we are for covenant with God, and let that joy spill out into the world.
