The one who gazes into the law of liberty and obeys it will be blessed in his doing.

What Does James 1:25 Mean?

James turns to the better hearer, who does not merely glance but looks intently into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it. He calls God's word a law of liberty, for obeying it does not bind the soul but frees it to live as it was made to live.

This person is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, one who carries what he sees into how he lives. And the promise is rich: this man shall be blessed in his deed, in the very doing itself. The blessing is not a reward earned afterward but a happiness found within the obedient life. To gaze long at God's word and then live it is to step into the freedom and joy Christ intends.

In the Original Language

eleutheria (ἐλευθερία), 'liberty' -- freedom, here the liberty to live rightly that God's word brings.
