James 4:8 Meaning and Explanation

James offers one of Scripture's most tender promises: "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." The smallest step in His direction is met by His own step toward us. Then he names what drawing near involves. "Cleanse your hands" speaks of what we do, the actions that need washing. "Purify your hearts" reaches deeper, to what we love and want. And he addresses the "double minded," those of us trying to face God and the world at once, gently calling us to one undivided heart.

We could never cleanse ourselves clean enough to deserve His nearness, and the good news is that His coming does not wait for our perfection. Through Jesus the way to God stands open, and He meets us while we are still on the road, like the father who ran to the returning child. We turn toward Him with whatever honesty we have, and discover He was already on His way to us.

"Cleanse your hands" carries the memory of the priest at the laver, who washed before he dared approach the altar, lest he come near unworthily. James takes that ancient nearness and presses it upon every heart: the whole person, hands and inward loves alike, is summoned to draw close. The Psalmist asked, "Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD?" and answered, "He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart." What once guarded the sanctuary now describes the soul that would come near. Yet the marvel of the promise is its order transformed by grace: we draw near still unclean, and His drawing near is itself what begins to wash us. The approach and the cleansing are not rivals.
