Bildad turns from the home to the road of life. The wicked man once walked with confident, powerful 'steps,' but now they are 'straitened' cramped, hemmed in, robbed of room to move. Worse, it is 'his own counsel' his own plans and advice that trips him and throws him down.
This is a sober picture of how sin works: the very cleverness a person trusts becomes the trap that ruins him. What looked like strength narrows into a cage of his own making.
