What Does Job 22:11 Mean?
Eliphaz continues describing Job's plight in vivid images: darkness so thick he cannot see, and a flood of waters rising over him. These are ancient pictures of being overwhelmed by forces beyond control, and Eliphaz reads them as the fruit of Job's supposed sins.
Yet the same images appear elsewhere in Scripture on the lips of the righteous when deep trouble engulfs them. Darkness and floods do not by themselves signal divine anger. The Lord is able to meet His people in the very depths, and the waters that seem to drown can become the place where His saving hand is revealed.
