What Does Job 22:20 Mean?
Eliphaz finishes his picture of the wicked's downfall: while the substance of the righteous stands secure, whatever remains of the wicked is devoured by fire. He draws a sharp line between the lasting estate of the godly and the ashes left of the rebellious.
Eliphaz's neat formula does not hold up in Job's case, yet the larger biblical hope does endure. What is built in righteousness has a permanence the works of evil never gain, and the fire that consumes the chaff cannot touch what is precious to God.
