The creature's heart is likened to stone, as hard as the nether millstone, the heavy lower stone on which the grain is crushed. Even at its core, leviathan is unyielding and strong.
The image of a heart of stone is sobering, for elsewhere Scripture speaks of human hearts grown hard and of God's promise to give a new heart of flesh in its place. Where leviathan's hardness is its strength, ours is our peril, and the mercy of God is that He softens what we cannot, replacing the stone within us with a heart alive to Him.
