Context

After Israel responds to God's call to repent, He promises to remove the locust judgment and pour out abundant restoration and blessing upon the repentant land.

What Does Joel 2:25 Mean?

Joel 2:25 is God's promise to restore the years that the locusts had eaten, undoing the devastation of what He calls His own great army. The four insect names -- locust, cankerworm, caterpiller, palmerworm -- likely describe stages or kinds of the destroying swarm that had stripped the land bare. The loss was not just a single harvest but "years," a long stretch of ruin and want. Into that hopeless picture God speaks one of Scripture's most beloved promises of recovery.

The wonder of the verse is the word "restore." God does not merely promise to stop the plague or to grant a single good season. He pledges to give back the years that were lost, making up for the cumulative damage. What seemed permanently gone is treated as recoverable in His hands. The phrase "my great army which I sent among you" is sobering -- the calamity had a purpose under God's hand, meant to turn His people back to Him. Yet the same God who sent the discipline now promises the blessing. This verse has comforted countless people who feel they have wasted or lost years to sin, hardship, or sorrow. It declares that God is able to redeem even time itself, bringing fruitfulness out of seasons that looked like total loss for those who return to Him.

In the Original Language

The Hebrew shalam (restore) means to make whole, complete, or repay in full. Arbeh (locust) is the most common term for the devouring swarm that ravaged crops in the ancient land.

Application

Trust that God can redeem and restore even the seasons that seem wasted or lost, bringing renewed fruitfulness to those who turn back to Him.
