What Does John 10:39 Mean?

The appeal to Scripture and works does not soften them; they move from stones to arrest, "again" (John 7:30, 44). And again the attempt fails. John does not explain how — only that he "escaped out of their hand," for his hour, so often spoken of in this Gospel, had not yet come.

There is quiet irony in the wording: no one can pluck the sheep out of his hand, and no one can take the Shepherd before his time. Jesus is never the hunted victim of events; he will be taken only when he gives himself (John 18:4-8). Until then no plan against him can close its grip — and the same unhurried purpose of God watches over all his flock.
