What Does John 10:40 Mean?
With Jerusalem set on his death and his hour not yet come, Jesus retires beyond the Jordan to the place of John's first preaching and of his own baptism (John 1:28). The story has come full circle in geography: a ministry that began at the river returns to the river before the final Passover.
The withdrawal is not retreat but obedience to a timetable his enemies do not control.
