John 11:23 Meaning and Explanation

Jesus answers her unspoken hope with a plain promise. The words sound like the familiar comfort spoken at any graveside in Israel — a rising at the last day — and Martha takes them so (v. 24). He means that, and more: Lazarus will rise within the hour.

The promise is deliberately spacious, drawing Martha forward step by step. Jesus often gives his word before he explains it, asking us to trust the Promiser ahead of the timetable. Every believer mourning by a grave holds this same sentence with both of its horizons: a real rising at the last day, and a living Lord who can do more than we ask, sooner than we dream.
