What Does John 11:27 Mean?
Martha may not yet grasp all that 'the resurrection and the life' contains, but she knows whom she trusts, and she says so in three titles: the Christ, God's promised Anointed; the Son of God; the Coming One foretold by the prophets. Her confession stands beside Peter's (Matthew 16:16) and states the very purpose for which John wrote his Gospel (John 20:31).
Notably, she says it all before the stone moves. Faith here precedes the miracle rather than resting on it. When we cannot untangle what God is doing, we can still declare who Jesus is — and that confession, made in the dark, is the one the Gospel holds up as a model.
