What Does John 11:30 Mean?
John pauses to fix the scene: Jesus remains outside Bethany, near the road and the burial places, rather than entering the house of mourning. There Martha had met him, and there Mary is now headed.
Even the staging serves a purpose. By drawing the sisters out to himself, Jesus also draws the crowd (v. 31) — gathering every needed witness toward the tomb where God's glory will be shown.
