What Does John 12:31 Mean?
Spoken days before the cross, this is Jesus' reading of the event about to unfold. The world preparing to condemn him is in fact the party on trial, its rebellion fully unmasked; and behind that rebellion stands an unseen ruler whose eviction is at hand.
What will look like the powers of darkness at their strongest is in truth their breaking point. At the cross the accuser loses his claim on all who take refuge in Christ, and his hold on the world is cut at the root. Believers live inside that victory: the prince of this world is a deposed power, raging on after his defeat has been sealed.
