What Does John 13:30 Mean?
The scene closes on a short, heavy line. Judas receives the bread of friendship and leaves immediately to sell his friend. John, the eyewitness, remembers the texture of the moment, the door, the going out, the darkness waiting beyond it.
"It was night" is a fact, and far more than a fact. In this Gospel, light and darkness carry the weight of belief and unbelief (John 1:5; 3:19-21; 11:10), and Judas walks out of the presence of the Light of the world into a dark he has chosen. Night is where a soul arrives when it leaves Jesus. Yet even this night must serve the dawn, for the deed done in darkness will end in resurrection morning.
