What Does John 13:31 Mean?
The door closes on the betrayer, and the tone lifts. With the shadow gone out, Jesus turns to his own, and the great farewell words of chapters 13 through 17 begin to flow. The first of them is strange triumph: the treachery now in motion brings the cross near, and Jesus calls it glory, and calls it "now."
In this Gospel, glory gathers at the cross (John 12:23-24). The Son is glorified in self-giving, and God is glorified in the Son, for the clearest unveiling of what God is like will be his Son laying down his life for his friends.
