What Does John 2:23 Mean?
Jesus evidently worked other signs during the feast, though John leaves them untold. Passover crowds watch the wonders and believe in his name — a real response, and yet the very next verse will weigh it and find it thin.
There is a believing that follows miracles the way a crowd follows excitement — sincere as far as it goes, but shallow of root. Jesus does not despise such faith; he receives it, and he knows exactly what it is. The verse asks what our own believing is made of: love for the Giver, or appetite for the gifts? Signs are doorways, and they are blessed who walk through to the Person they reveal.
