What Does John 3:10 Mean?
Jesus answers the question with a question, and a piercing one. Art thou a master of Israel — the office is named with emphasis — and knowest not these things? The new birth was no novelty: the prophets had long promised a new heart and a new spirit (Ezekiel 36:26; Jeremiah 31:33).
The rebuke is gentle but real. It is possible to be expert in the Scriptures and a stranger to their central promise — to teach the texts and miss the life they breathe. Yet even the rebuke serves the man: it loosens his grip on the credential he leaned upon, so that empty-handed he might receive what only God can give. Degrees and offices do not open the kingdom; birth does.
