What Does John 3:24 Mean?
A brief aside fixes the scene in time. The other Gospels take up Jesus' ministry after John's arrest (Mark 1:14); this Gospel preserves an earlier season, when both men were baptizing at once, before Herod shut the forerunner away.
The clause reads almost casually, yet it tolls like a distant bell: not yet. Imprisonment and death are coming for John, and the first readers knew it. Scripture never hides the fact that faithfulness can end in a cell. But the timing rests with God — until the appointed hour no prison could hold him, and when that hour came, his work was complete and his joy, by his own word, fulfilled (verse 29).
