John 3:25 Meaning and Explanation

With two baptizing ministries in the land, a question was bound to surface. Some of John's disciples fall into dispute with the Jews about purifying — the ceremonial washing of which baptism was the living question of the hour (John 2:6). Behind the debate lies an uneasy comparison: whose washing counts, their master's or the newcomer's?

The argument itself goes unrecorded; what matters is where it leads — to John, and through John's mouth to one of the loveliest confessions in Scripture (verses 27-30). Controversy about religious practice is often a thief of peace, but God can make it an occasion: this quarrel becomes the stage on which a heart utterly free of rivalry is displayed.
