The response is immediate. On the testimony of one woman, Sychar empties toward Jacob's well — a stream of Samaritans crossing the fields where Jesus sits with his disciples, a procession of the curious on their way to becoming believers (v. 39).

Keep this picture in mind for the next scene: as Jesus speaks of fields white already to harvest (v. 35), the harvest is literally walking toward him. One reported encounter set a whole town in motion. No messenger is too new, too unschooled, or too compromised to be the door through which others come to Christ — her single sentence carried a city to the well.
