What Does John 4:31 Mean?
Between the woman's departure and the town's arrival, John turns to the disciples. They had gone for food (v. 8); now they offer it — Master, eat — simple, practical care for a teacher they had left tired and hungry at the wellside.
Their concern is kind and entirely reasonable, and it sets up one of Jesus' great sayings about what truly sustains him (vv. 32-34). It is possible to be near Christ, busy serving Christ, and still be thinking mainly of bread. He receives their care, then lifts their eyes — as he had lifted the woman's — from the visible supply to the deeper food.
