Context
The disciples converse among themselves, trying to understand Jesus remark about having food.
What Does John 4:33 Mean?
They huddled close, whispering among themselves: Who brought him food? Did we miss it? There is both genuine concern and bewilderment. They are trying to solve an earthly riddle when Jesus is speaking in spiritual language. This is the human condition before the eyes of the spirit are opened.
The disciples' confusion mirrors our own when Scripture speaks in image and symbol. We assume the literal explanation until the Author gently corrects us. In this moment, they are poised on the threshold.
Application
When we find ourselves confused by Jesus words, we are often standing at a threshold of deeper understanding.
