What Does John 5:27 Mean?
To the gift of life-giving is added authority to judge, and the reason given is a title: because he is the Son of man. The words recall Daniel's vision of one like the Son of man receiving dominion, glory, and a kingdom (Daniel 7:13-14), and they also say something simpler: he is human.
We will be judged by one who has been here, who knows weariness, hunger, grief, and temptation from the inside (Hebrews 4:15). That is no promise of leniency toward evil; it is the end of every excuse that the Judge does not understand. He understands completely, and his judgment is just (v. 30).
