What Does John 5:26 Mean?
Jesus explains how his voice can wake the dead. The Father has life in himself, life underived and unborrowed; and he has given to the Son to have life in himself, the same fullness, the Son's very own.
Everything else that lives borrows its life moment by moment, lent breath from God (Acts 17:25). The Son does not borrow; life is in him, which is why this Gospel began by saying so, in him was life (1:4), and why he can later say, I am the resurrection and the life (11:25). Your life is safest entrusted to one whose life cannot fail.
