What Does John 5:26 Mean?
'The Father hath life in himself' distinguishes divine life from the dependent life of creatures. The Father does not draw existence from an external source. He is living and gives life. The sentence then says, 'so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself.' Jesus preserves both correspondence and gift. The Son possesses life in Himself, and the Father is named as the One who gives that possession. The verse should be allowed to keep its relational order. It explains how the Son can speak with life-giving authority while remaining in perfect reception and unity with the Father.
The context defines the significance through action. Because the Son has life in Himself, people can hear His word and pass from death to life. The dead can hear His voice now in spiritual awakening and will hear it from graves in bodily resurrection. Eternal life is more than an endless extension supplied from a distance. Jesus says elsewhere that He has authority to lay down His life and take it again according to the Father's command. His death is real, while His resurrection reveals that life in Him cannot be finally conquered. He then gives the Spirit, nourishes disciples, and promises resurrection at the last day. Coming to Christ is therefore coming to the living One, never merely adopting a set of ideas about survival. His life can renew desire, reconcile people to God, sustain obedience, and finally transform mortal bodies into enduring resurrection life.

None competes with Him when received as gifts under His care. Jesus remains the source who can make all faithful means serve life rather than become idols.
