What Does John 5:25 Mean?
Jesus deepens the claim of verse 21. The hour is coming, and now is: already, in the days of his flesh, his voice is reaching the dead. He will stand at a tomb and call Lazarus out by name (11:43), and everyone dead toward God who truly hears him begins, then and there, to live.
No deadness is beyond the reach of that voice, and the verses ahead will carry it even into the graves (vv. 28-29). The one condition named is hearing: they that hear shall live. If God seems to be speaking to something in you that you had given up for dead, take heart; that is exactly whom the Son of God addresses.
