What Does John 5:29 Mean?
The resurrection is universal; its outcomes are not the same. The words echo Daniel 12:2, where many sleeping in the dust awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame. All come forth at his voice; what they rise to differs.
The deeds named here are not cut off from the believing named earlier: the one who hears and believes does not come into condemnation (v. 24), and in this Gospel the work God seeks begins with believing on him whom he hath sent (6:29), a faith that shows itself in doing truth and coming to the light (3:21).
