Context

Jesus speaks during his bread of life discourse in Capernaum, addressing a crowd that has seen his miracles yet does not believe. He points to the Father's work and his own unfailing welcome.

What Does John 6:37 Mean?

John 6:37 brings together two great assurances in one breath: the Father is at work drawing people to the Son, and the Son will never turn away anyone who comes. Spoken amid a crowd that has largely failed to believe, the verse looks past the unbelief to a deeper certainty.

The first half lifts our eyes upward: "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me." Behind every genuine coming to Jesus stands the Father's gracious initiative. Salvation is not a merely human project; God himself is involved in drawing hearts. The second half then turns to the warmest of welcomes: "him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." The double negative in the Greek makes the promise emphatic -- by no means, never, will Jesus refuse the one who comes. There is no qualification, no fine print, no category of person excluded. The two halves work together to encourage anyone hesitating at the door. You need not wonder whether you are wanted; the only question is whether you will come. And to all who do, the answer is already given: he will never cast them out. Few promises in Scripture offer such complete reassurance to the one who simply comes to Christ.

In the Original Language

The Greek "ou me ekbalo exo" uses a double negative for strong emphasis: "I will by no means cast out." "Didosin" (giveth) speaks of the Father's giving, and "erchomenon" (cometh) of the one who comes.

Application

If you wonder whether Christ would receive someone like you, hear his promise: he will never cast out the one who comes. The only question is whether you will come.
