Context
After the long discourse on the Father's role and Jesus' unique knowledge, Jesus returns to the simple condition and promise: faith in him brings eternal life.
What Does John 6:47 Mean?
'Verily, verily' is the most solemn affirmation in the language. Jesus uses it to mark statements that are the heart of his teaching. 'He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.' Not 'will have' but 'hath.' Present tense. The life is already yours if you believe. This is not a future promise only, though it includes the future. It is a present possession. To believe in Jesus is to enter into life that cannot be diminished or destroyed by death.
The simplicity is breath-taking. Believe on me. Not 'be good enough,' not 'understand all the mysteries,' not 'clean yourself up first.' Believe. That is the door. And on the other side of that door is everlasting life. Everything in Jesus' teaching points toward this: the barrier to life is not sin or unworthiness, but unbelief. The gate is as open as belief itself.
Application
Belief is not intellectual assent alone; it is trust, reliance, commitment. Where are you holding back from fully believing on Jesus? What would change if you crossed that threshold?
