What Does John 7:27 Mean?
A popular expectation held that the Messiah would appear suddenly, his origins a mystery until the moment of his unveiling. These hearers know Jesus' town and family — we know this man whence he is — so by that measure he cannot be the Christ.
The irony runs deep: they know far less than they think. They know Nazareth and the carpenter's household; they do not know Bethlehem (verse 42), and above all they do not know the Father from whom he truly comes (verses 28-29). Familiarity can masquerade as knowledge and bar the door to faith. Many still dismiss Jesus on the strength of a secondhand acquaintance.
