Jesus speaks during a temple debate about freedom and slavery to sin. Having said that sin enslaves, he points to himself as the Son who can grant true and lasting freedom.
What Does John 8:36 Mean?
John 8:36 declares that the freedom Christ gives is the real and lasting kind: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." In the preceding verses Jesus has spoken of the bondage of sin -- how anyone who sins is, in a sense, its servant. Now he names the one who can break that bondage and the genuine liberty he brings.
The emphasis falls on "the Son." Jesus alone has the authority and power to set a person truly free, because the freedom he gives reaches the root of the problem. The freedom in view is deeper than any outward circumstance; it is release from the grip of sin that holds the heart. The word "indeed" -- truly, really -- distinguishes this freedom from every counterfeit. People chase many kinds of freedom that prove shallow or short-lived, but the liberty the Son gives is real all the way down and cannot be taken away. There is also a beautiful contrast in the surrounding verses between a servant and a son: the Son who abides in the house forever is the very one who can bring others into that lasting freedom and belonging. To be freed by Christ is to be free in the fullest sense -- not merely let off, but set right and welcomed home.
In the Original Language
The Greek "eleutherose" (make free) comes from "eleutheroo," to set free or liberate. "Ontos" (indeed) means really or genuinely, marking this freedom as the authentic kind.
