What Does Joshua 10:4 Mean?
The summons is blunt: come and help me strike Gibeon. The crime in their eyes is that Gibeon made peace with Joshua and Israel. To the coalition, choosing peace with God's people is an act of betrayal worthy of destruction. They turn their first fury not on Israel but on the city that defected.
There is a pointed irony here. Gibeon's peace, however it was secured, has placed it under Israel's protection, and through Israel under God's. To attack those who have sought refuge with God's people is to set oneself against God. The world has always been uneasy with those who cross over to the Lord's side, and persecution of the convert is an old story.
