What Does Joshua 12:22 Mean?
Kedesh in the north would later be set apart as a city of refuge for those who killed unintentionally, and Jokneam lay near the slopes of Carmel. Both kings are numbered among the defeated.
It is striking that Kedesh, soon to become a place of mercy and sanctuary, is here a place of victory. The land won in war would also become a land of refuge and grace. God's conquests are never ends in themselves; they open the way for His mercy to dwell among His people. Even the record of battle points toward the shelter He provides.
