What Does Judges 11:28 Mean?
Despite Jephthah's careful and just argument, the king of Ammon will not listen. He hardens himself against the truth and rejects every word Jephthah has sent him. With diplomacy exhausted and the appeal refused, war becomes unavoidable.
The refusal of truth is a sober thing. Jephthah did all that words could do; the failure lies wholly with the one who would not hear. When reason and righteousness are set aside, the consequences follow, and the responsibility rests upon the heart that closed itself to peace. It is a solemn reminder that the truth, however patiently offered, still asks for a listening heart to receive it.
