What Does Judges 11:4 Mean?
The narrator shifts from Jephthah's personal story to the national crisis. In process of time, the Ammonites press their war against Israel, the oppression that frames this whole chapter and that will soon drive the people of Gilead to seek a champion they once refused.
The crisis sets the stage for grace. Israel's distress is the soil in which God's deliverance so often grows. The same trouble that humbles a people can turn their eyes back toward the Lord and toward the very man they had cast aside. What feels only like calamity may be the opening through which mercy comes, for God is never far from those who finally cry out to him.
