1 Chronicles 13 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

King David misses having God close. He wants to bring God's special golden chest home — and he learns that God is worth honoring carefully.

Today's Story

King David had a big idea, and he wanted everyone to share it. He gathered the people together and said, “Let's go and bring back the ark of our God!”

The ark was a beautiful golden chest. It was the sign that God was with His people — the most precious thing in all the land. But for a long, long time it had been kept far away in a little town, almost forgotten.

David didn't want God to feel far away anymore. He wanted God right in the middle of everything. So a huge, happy crowd set out to bring the ark home. They sang. They played harps and trumpets and tambourines. The whole nation came along.

But on the way, something went wrong, and the celebration stopped. The people learned an important thing that day: God is so good and so great that we don't rush in any old way — we come to Him carefully, the way He shows us, because He is truly special.

David thought hard about that. He still wanted God near more than anything. He just needed to learn the right way to bring Him home — and soon, he would.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. When you hold something precious — like a tiny baby animal or a fragile gift — how do you carry it? Why so carefully?
  2. David wanted God right in the middle of his life, not far away. What is one way your family can keep God close this week?
  3. It is good to be excited about God and to treat Him as special. What does it look like to do both at the same time?
