1 Chronicles 24 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

There were so many priests who wanted to help in God's house that they needed a fair way to take turns. Here is how David made sure everyone got a turn.

Today's Story

God's house had a lot of priests — helpers whose special job was to lead the people in worship. And there was a happy problem: there were so many of them! They couldn't all serve at the very same time.

So King David sorted the priests into groups. Each group would take its turn helping in God's house, and then the next group would have its turn, around and around, so everyone got a chance.

But how do you decide which group goes first, and which goes next? David didn't want anyone saying, “You only picked them because they're your favorite!” So he chose the order by drawing lots — a little like pulling names out of a hat. That way the choice was left in God's hands, and it was fair for everybody.

Big families and little families, important-sounding names and quiet ones — every single group got its turn to serve. Nobody was left out, and nobody got to skip ahead.

God loves it when His people serve Him, and He loves it when we take turns fairly and kindly.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. David made sure everyone got a turn. When is it hard for you to take turns — with a toy, a game, or talking?
  2. David made the choosing fair so there were no favorites. Why does being fair help everyone feel happy and included?
  3. Every helper, big or small, got a turn to serve God. What is one small way you could serve God or your family this week?
