1 Chronicles 26 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

David picks the people who will guard the doors of God's house and look after its treasures — quiet jobs that matter more than you might think.

Today's Story

God's house was going to be a big, busy place. So King David made sure every job had someone to do it — even the jobs nobody usually notices.

Some men were chosen to be gatekeepers. Their job was to stand at the doors of God's house and watch over them. They opened the gates in the morning and guarded them all day, north, south, east, and west, so everything inside stayed safe.

To pick who watched which gate, they drew lots, like picking names from a hat. Strong young men, gray-haired grandpas, whole families — everyone got a turn and a place.

Other workers had the job of looking after the treasure rooms, where the special gifts for God were kept safe and counted.

Standing at a door might not sound exciting. But these were the people who kept God's house safe and ready. To God, the helper at the door mattered just as much as the singer or the king. Every job done for God is a job worth doing well.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. What is a job you help with at home — even a small one? How does it help your family?
  2. The gatekeepers had a quiet job that nobody cheered for. Why do you think God still cared about it so much?
  3. God gives every person a part to play. What is one way YOU could help do God's work, even if it's small?
